Decorating Your Home with Moldings

Moldings are decorative details that are installed to spruce up any décor, conceal shoddy construction or achieve a classic look. These are some of the cheapest decorative ideas that can work wonders in sparking a good amount of interest by creating a more luxurious look out of a box-of-a-room. The installation of moldings can truly enhance any home by reflecting a sense of style and character.

Enumerated are some of the most common types of moldings that you too can use in decorating your home:

• Casing generally comes in 1” to 4” wide woodwork that are used to fill-in the space between the wall and the door or window.

• Chair Railing Molding runs horizontally on the walls rising about 30” from the floor. This was originally designed to keep the chairs from hitting the wall but is now commonly used for decorative purposes only.

• Baseboard Moldings are installed to run along the corner where the wall meets with the flooring, adjoining these two surfaces.

• Crown Moldings are attached to adjoin the area where the wall meets with the ceiling. Typically, homes make use of an average 4” to 5” crown moldings but with houses having higher ceilings, they can opt to have an elaborate molding of 15” to 20”.

Decorating your home with moldings brings out the drama and creates a focal point out of the décor or home features that you have adorned. Aside from the usual places where the common types of molding can be installed, you can also have them fixed around other areas like the fireplace. When attached to the ceiling of a formal room, it can serve as a mounting area for a chandelier or other hanging fixtures. Create elegant framed patterns on the walls to make it periodic. You can even redefine a simple bookcase by framing it in moldings and transforming it into a classy looking piece of furniture. The possibilities can be countless. You just have to get your creative juices working.

Now that you know what the common types are and you already have great ideas on how to decorate your home with moldings, given is another batch of tips to help you out on shopping for and selecting the right molding for your home:

• Let it complement. The main idea for adding this decorative touch to your home is to enhance its overall appeal. Choose the molding that would complement with the design of your home or the rest of the décor in the room. A contemporary styled house or a ranch designed home would look best with simple moldings. Elaborate moldings however, are best for elegant periodic homes.

• Size Matters. Of course it does, so when shopping for the right molding to bring out the richness out of a room, you should consider the measurements. Do not overdo things by having a good-sized molding stick out oddly in a small sized room. The ratio of 1” per 1’ works well to have a good estimate on the right dimensions.

• A Little More is Better. After having chosen the best design in the proper width or size, the next step for you is obviously to buy. While at it, make sure to buy a little more than what you think you will need. Even after you have measured the lengths, there will still be miter corner cuts and joints where you’ll need some additional moldings.
