Drywall or Plaster?

Drywall and plaster are interior construction materials that are commonly found in whatever room from the comfy master bedroom, bathroom and even basement finishes. And just like any building material holding your home together, making it beautiful as well as functional, these will also show problems in the long run. Drywall, also known as plasterboard, is made of gypsum plaster and covered on either sides with heavyweight paper or fiberglass matting. Readily available in sheets that is generally required by modern residential building codes; these materials are common in modern houses. They are also designed for easy installation and can very well accommodate electrical wiring. But long before drywall has even existed, plaster techniques has been around and has been widely used by homes throughout the centuries. Modern application methods of this material allows for artistic designs. After drywall and plaster have been applied to the walls, you can have them traditionally painted or wallpapered. Depending on the room’s style and your taste, there are also other creative wall treatments that you could choose from including: mirror tiles, wood paneling, cork, brick, fabric, or stucco. As your walls are great contributors to the ambiance of the room and the mood it conjures, your choice of treatment, along with the texture, color and design is essential. Whether you use drywall, plaster, or a combination of both in your home; your interior is still prone to issues needing repair.
  • Though plasters are both good-looking and durable, cracks will eventually appear ranging in thickness from hairline to larger ones.
  • Though drywall surfaces are generally tough, holes can still be created if the impact of anything hitting the wall is too much.
  • Another common issue is popping of drywall nails.
  • Installation, maintenance and repair of drywall and plaster are common projects that many homeowners choose to do themselves. It would be a wiser option to have qualified contractors handle the project for you if you think that you are not up to it. These seemingly easy projects are often what turn out into home improvement pitfalls that many homeowners fall into, ending up in more costs, hassles, prolonged project time; and eventually needing the help of a skillful contractor.
